Getting ready for Mud Monsters Run and wondering what to wear? You’re not alone, it’s one of the most common questions we get and the right kit can make a huge difference to your comfort, confidence and safety on the course. Whether you’re tackling 3km, 5km or the full 10km, here’s everything you need to know before you hit the mud on our mud run.

Start with the Right Footwear

Your shoes are the most important part of your kit, they’ll decide whether you’re powering through the mud or sliding around like Bambi! We highly recommend trail, cross‑country or fell running shoes with grippy soles, as they give you far better traction and help prevent slips and injuries. Normal trainers? They’ll get you round, but once they’re muddy they turn into skates making them frustrating and risky while doing the mud run. Moulded football boots can work in the mud, but be careful on obstacles as they offer very little grip when climbing. Also, just to be clear: no spikes allowed, our team will be checking footwear on the day for safety reasons.

Lightweight Clothing Is Your Best Friend

When it comes to clothing, think light, quick‑drying and flexible, like our race tees. Heavy or thick fabrics soak up water, weigh you down and make you colder, not ideal when you’re wading through swamps and streams. Long sleeves and leggings can help protect your skin from scratches as you move through woods and obstacles. And trust us on this one: bring a full change of clothes for after the run. Nothing beats getting warm, dry and comfy before grabbing food and swapping muddy stories in the event village.

What to Wear Afterwards

Once you’ve crossed the finish line, collected your medal and wiped the mud out of your eyes, you’ll want to get warm and dry as quickly as possible. Here’s what we recommend packing for the post‑run glow‑up:

Warm, Dry Clothes

Bring a full change of clothes from top to bottom, we are talking socks, underwear, everything. You’ll be surprised how quickly the cold hits once you stop moving. Even a changing robe can provide a cosy cocoon to help warm you up.

A Cosy Hoodie or Jacket

A big warm layer is essential. Even on sunny days, the combination of water, mud and wind can leave you chilly once you’ve finished. You can always purchase one of our super fluffy hoodies from our shop on the day.

Comfortable Footwear

Pack something easy to slip on, like trainers or sliders. Your muddy shoes will be… well, muddy. You’ll thank yourself later.

A Towel

We have hot water bucket showers on the day so you can rinse off some of the mud which means a towel is perfect for drying off, it’s also handy for standing on while you change. A microfiber one will be easy to pack and quick to dry.

A Bag for Muddy Kit

A bin bag or waterproof sack is perfect for containing the chaos until you get home.

Optional: A Hat or Beanie

If it’s breezy, this makes a huge difference to how quickly you warm up. We will have hats and beanies for sale in our shop on race day. A Few Extra Tips

  • Avoid anything cotton — it holds water like a sponge.

  • Tie your shoes tightly so they don’t get sucked off in the mud.

  • If you’re adding costume elements, make sure they’re safe, lightweight and won’t snag.

  • Gloves are optional, but some runners like them for grip on obstacles.

Get Ready to Get Muddy

Wearing the right kit means you can focus on the fun, the obstacles, the teamwork, the chaos and the laughter. So, gear up, dress smart and get ready for the muddiest mud run adventure of your year.
